Kwani and the Medicine Chief stood on the terrace outside her door.

She said, “I know of calling the game, but I know nothing of calling spirits.” She stared, astonished.

He returned her stare with an imperial gaze. “You know the story of Masau’u, do you not?”

“Yes.”

“You will be allowed to reveal all you know about Masau’u. However, you will not be permitted to participate in other events of the Calling Ceremony.”

“I am not sure I care to participate at all. It is not the duty of She Who Remembers.” She turned away.

“You wish for Okalake to return, I presume?” He restrained the sarcasm, but it was evident, nevertheless.

“Of course.”

“The Sun Chief goes to find him. You would like for him to return safely?”

“Naturally. But—”

“Then you can hardly refuse to participate. Unless, of course, you have reasons for not wanting Okalake, and his father, of course, to return.” He smiled widely.

Kwani whirled to face him. People had gathered, pretending not to listen, but edging closer.

She said, “I will confer with the spirits of my necklace and the medicine arrow to decide whether or not to participate in the Calling Ceremony. However”—she raised her voice slightly for the benefit of the bystanders—“if I do decide to participate, it will be because of what the spirits tell me to do, and not because the Medicine Chief needs me to accomplish for him what he is unable to do on his own.”

She turned and entered her doorway, yanking the curtain behind her.

It was only too true that she cared—too much—whether or not Okalake returned and cared a great deal for Sun Chief’s safety, as well. But regardless of the Medicine Chief, she knew she would agree to be the Caller for the ceremony. Anything to bring Okalake and his father safely home.
